Preparation phase: For small birds (canaries, exotic finches, British finches, parakeet brands) it is recommended to start by preparing for the food change. Birds are not forced to eat pellets, but are trained to recognize them as one of the elements of their food. In 2 – 3 weeks, they get the usual seed mixture to which 10% pellets are added. For large and medium parrots, this preparation phase is not necessary. Transition: birds receive only pellets throughout the period, without mixing with seed. On certain days (see table) seeds are given to eat at will. The periods of feeding only pellets are gradually increased so that the birds get used to eating more of them. “Seed days” are included to prevent the birds from losing a lot of weight and to regain the energy they lost during “pellet days”. General advice: only do a feed change with birds in good health. Do not go directly to pelleted food in newly purchased birds. Be careful and watch your birds well.
